What goes through the mind of an architect when he sits in front of a piece of paper, honestly a lot. Whether it’s a self-taught architect like Tadao Ando or one that went to architectural school. The outcome is the same, they filter through years of reading, experience, and mentorship to come up with their great designs.
Architecture is itself a very multidisciplinary field, that takes years to master, there is no way you will get a comprehensive architectural education. Most of what you learn in your trade is going to come from self-education and reading material from those that came before you.
I assembled a list of books for architectural students. A list so diverse it includes, history, philosophy, failures, construction, urban theories, visualization, and more, let’s dive straight into them

Rem Koolhaas. Elements of Architecture

Description via Amazon
Elements of Architecture focuses on the fragments of the rich and complex architectural collage. Window, facade, balcony, corridor, fireplace, stair, escalator, elevator: the book seeks to excavate the micro-narratives of building the detail. The result is no single history, but rather the web of origins, contamination’s, similarities, and differences in architectural evolution, including the influence of technological advances, climatic adaptation, political calculation, economic contexts, regulatory requirements, and new digital opportunities. It’s a guide that is long overdue in Koolhaas’s own words, “Never was a book more relevant at a moment where architecture as we know it is changing beyond recognition.”
Derived, updated, and expanded from Koolhaas’s exhaustive and much-lauded exhibition at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, this is an essential toolkit to understanding the fundamentals that comprise structure around the globe. Designed by Irma Boom and based on research from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the 2,600-page monograph contains essays from Rem Koolhaas, Stephan Trueby, Manfredo di Robilant, and Jeffrey Inaba; interviews with Werner Sobek and Tony Fadell (of Nest); and an exclusive photo essay by Wolfgang Tillmans.
In addition to comprehensively updated texts and new images, this edition is designed and produced to visually (and physically) embody the immense scope of its subject matter: Custom split-spine binding: our printer modified their industrial binding machine to allow for the flexible, eight-centimeter thick spine
It contains a new introductory chapter with forewords, table of contents, and an index, located in the middle of the book (where it naturally opens due to its unique spine).
Printed on 50g Opakal paper, allowing for the ideal level of opacity needed to realize Boom’s palimpsest-like design
Translucent overlays and personal annotations by Koolhaas and Boom are woven in each chapter to create an alternative, faster route through the book
Printed at the originally intended 100% size for full readability

How Drawings Work: A User-Friendly Theory

How Drawings Work cheekily explains that what architects make is information that enables other people to make buildings. That information comes in a variety of forms: drawings by hand and computer, models both physical and virtual, and words as needed. The book reflects in witty prose on the nature of architectural drawings as tools of communication, pulling from a diverse and eclectic landscape of theories from grammar, functional linguistics, philosophy, art criticism, science fiction, popular culture, and, of course, architecture, to propose a new way to think about architectural communication.

The Design of Everyday Things: Revised and Expanded Edition

Description via Amazon
Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door.
The fault, argues this ingenious — even liberating — book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization.
The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time.
The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how — and why — some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.
The Structural Basis of Architecture

Description via Amazon
This is a book that shows how to “see” structures as being integral to architecture. It engages a subject that is both about understanding the mechanical aspects of structure and being able to relate this to the space, form, and conceptual design ideas that are inherent to the art of building.
Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best-known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, illustrated by many photographs and structural behavior diagrams. Accessible mathematical equations and worked-out examples are also included to deepen a fundamental understanding of the topic.
This new, color edition’s format has been thoroughly revised and its content updated and expanded throughout. It is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration, for here two essential questions are addressed in parallel fashion: “How do structures work?” and “What form do structures take in the context of architecture – and why so?” A rich, varied and engaging rationale for structural form in architecture thus emerges.
Experiencing Architecture

Description via Amazon
Widely regarded as a classic in the field, Experiencing Architecture explores the history and promise of good design. Generously illustrated with historical examples of designing excellence, ranging from teacups, riding boots, and golf balls to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of Beijing’s Winter Palace, Rasmussen’s accessible guide invites us to appreciate architecture not only as a profession but as an art that shapes everyday experience.
In the past, Rasmussen argues, architecture was not just an individual pursuit, but a community undertaking. Dwellings were built with a natural feeling for place, materials and use, resulting in “a remarkably suitable comeliness.” While we cannot return to a former age, Rasmussen notes, we can still design spaces that are beautiful and useful by seeking to understand architecture as an art form that must be experienced. An understanding of good design comes not only from one’s professional experience of architecture as an abstract, individual pursuit but also from one’s shared, everyday experience of architecture in real-time. Its particular use of light, color, shape, scale, texture, rhythm, and sound.
Experiencing architecture reminds us of what good architectural design has accomplished over time, what it can accomplish still, and why it is worth pursuing. Wide-ranging and approachable, it is for anyone who has ever wondered “what instrument the architect plays on.”
Buildings Across Time: An Introduction to World Architecture

Description via Amazon
Now in its fifth edition, Buildings Across Time brilliantly explores the essential attributes of architecture by uniquely combining both a detailed survey of western architecture, including pre-Columbian America, and an introduction to architecture from the Middle East, India, Russia, China, and Japan. This latest edition includes over 450 new photos, a new essay on the vision of Pope Pius II, and updates on buildings in various parts of the world, such as those that have been given new purpose and those that have been damaged by ISIS.
Written in a clear and engaging style, the text encourages readers to examine closely in photographs and line drawings the pragmatic, innovative, and aesthetic attributes of buildings, and to imagine how these would have been praised or criticized by contemporary observers. Architecture is discussed in various contexts – artistic, economic, environmental, political, social, and technological – to determine the extent to which buildings meet the needs of clients, society at large, and future generations.

How to Read Architecture: An Introduction to Interpreting the Built Environment

How to Read Architecture is based on the fundamental premise that reading and interpreting architecture is something we already do, and that close observation matters. This book enhances this skill so that given an unfamiliar building, you will have the tools to understand it and to be inspired by it. Author Paulette Singley encourages you to misread, closely read, conventionally read, and unconventionally read architecture to stimulate your creative process.
This book explores three essential ways to help you understand architecture: reading a building from the outside-in, from the inside-out, and from the position of out-and-out, or formal, architecture. This book erodes boundaries between the frequently compartmentalized fields of interior design, landscape design, and building design with chapters exploring concepts of terroir, scenography, criticality, atmosphere, tectonics, inhabitation, type, form, and enclosure. Using examples and case studies that span a wide range of historical and global precedents, Singley addresses the complex interaction among the ways a building engages its context, addresses its performative exigencies, and operates as an autonomous aesthetic object.
Including over 300 images, this book is an essential read for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of architecture with a global focus on the interpretation of buildings in their context.
Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses

Description via Amazon
Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright’s Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright’s houses – from his Prairie-style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs. Along with Weintraub’s stunning photos and a selection of floor plans and archival images, the book includes text and essays by several leading Wright scholars. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses is an event of great importance and a major contribution to the literature on this titan of modern architecture.

The Art of Place: Architecture and Interiors

Description via Amazon
The work of architect and interior designer Lee Ledbetter represents a one-of-a-kind combination of traditional details and chic modernism. Lee Ledbetter established his practice in New Orleans in 1996 and has developed a body of work that emerges from his ability to incorporate historical precedent as well as regional and environmental context, and his firm has received recognition for its expertise well beyond its Deep South roots. Ledbetter’s interiors and architecture combine cleanly tailored and bright modernity with the unapologetic embellishment of refined and luxurious decoration. Ledbetter strongly believes design to be a fine art along with painting and sculpture, and he considers the placement and scale of furniture, artwork, and lighting as carefully as he does the creation of walls and the spaces they contain. As Mayer Rus, who provides the text for this title, once wrote in House & Garden, “Lee Ledbetter rejects the idea that a
Japanese Architecture: An Exploration of Elements & Forms

Description via Amazon
In Japanese Architecture, author Mira Locher explores how each of these stories encompasses the particular development, construction, function and symbolism inherent in historic architectural elements. From roofs, walls and floors to door pulls and kettle hangers, Japanese architecture situates these elements firmly within the natural environment and traditional Japanese culture.
Japanese architecture developed with influences from abroad and particular sociopolitical situations at home. The resulting forms of construction materials—soaring roofs with long eaves, heavy timber structures of stout columns supporting thick beams, mud plaster walls flecked with straw and sand and the refined paper-covered lattice shoji screen—are recognizable as being of distinctly Japanese design. These constructed forms, designed with strong connections to the surrounding environment, utilize natural construction materials in ways that are both practical and inventive.
This fascinating architecture book provides a comprehensive perspective of traditional Japanese architecture, relating the historical development and context of buildings and the Japanese garden while examining the stories of the individual architectural elements, from foundation to roof.

Programs and Manifestoes on 20th-Century Architecture

Description via Amazon
The present volume offers eloquent testimony that many of the master builders of this century have held passionate convictions regarding the philosophic and social basis of their art. Nearly every important development in the modern architectural movement began with the proclamation of these convictions in the form of a program or manifesto. The most influential of these are collected here in chronological order from 1903 to 1963. Taken together, they constitute a subjective history of modern architecture; compared with one another, their great diversity of style reveals in many cases the basic differences of attitude and temperament that produced a corresponding divergence in architectural style. In point of view, the book covers the aesthetic spectrum from right to left; from programs that rigidly generate designs down to the smallest detail to revolutionary manifestoes that call for anarchy in building form and town plan.
The documents, placed in context by the editor, are also international in their range: among them are the seminal and prophetic statements of Henry van de Velde, Adolf Loos, and Bruno Taut from the early years of the century; Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1910 annunciation of Organic Architecture; Gropius’s original program for the Bauhaus, founded in Weimar in 1919; “Towards a New Architecture, Guiding Principles” by Le Corbusier; the formulation by Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner of the basic principles of Constructivism; and articles by R. Buckminster Fuller on universal architecture and the architect as world planner. Other pronouncements, some in flamboyant style, including those of Erich Mendelsohn, Hannes Meyer, Theo van Doesburg, Oskar Schlemmer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, El Lissitzky, and Louis I. Kahn. There are also a number of collective or group statements, issued in the name of movements such as CIAM, De Stijl, ABC, the Situationists, and GEAM.
Since the dramatic effectiveness of the manifesto form is usually heightened by brevity and conciseness, it has been possible to reproduce most of the documents in their entirety; only a few have been excerpted.
The Revit Formula: Parameters and Formulas

Description via Amazon
The Revit Formula is a direct response to the 400+ page books on Revit that tend to be more discouraging than encouraging; this is a “you-can-do-it book” laser-focused on a specific topic, parameters and formulas.
The goal is to cut through the dry, illegible, and bloated tutorials written by software engineers, and provide an affordable, concentrated, pocketable, and utilitarian guide to parameters and formulas written by a designer for designers. The Architect, the Interior Designer, Structural MEP, the recently graduated, etc. If you work with Revit, this book should sit on your desk.
Now, while the main focus of this book is to learn parameters and formulas in an un-intimidating format, there is a secondary goal.
There are very useful tried and tested formulas and formula combinations in this book that can help anyone. So, if you don’t have time to digest all of its content, just copy some examples and learn that way. There is no wrong way. Learn by going step by step, by trial and error, or by copying and backward engineering formulas later. Just learn.
