Garage Design is evolving just like any other element of a building. It mostly depends on what part of the world you live in. The laws in different places and the preference of vehicle.
It also depends on what you want to do in your garage,
1. Parking space
2. Parking and working space
3. Parking, working and storage space
You have to make provision for opening the doors of your car. You should be able to open them without hitting either the walls of your garage or another car in the case of a double or triple garage.
There are lots of garage design ideas, but what we will look at here are basic garage placements to get you started on choosing your garage design. The final decision will mostly be on the site of the building and the design of your house
Attached and detached garages
Attached garage design
Attached garages form part of the house, these are more common than any other type of garage. They are built at the same time as the house. This type of garage provides a lot of convenience and security since you don’t need to step outside every time you want to visit the garage. They also double as storage space or workshop, meaning that they are mostly built spaciously. They can go up to 2, 3 or even 4 car garages
Detached garage design
Detached garages are the total opposite of attached garages. They are not joined to the house which means you will have to leave the house to enter the garage. They can be placed anywhere on the site which can be an advantage in itself since this allows for future extensions to both the house and garage. It’s also brilliant if your house does not have a good access point for a garage door, or if you want an extra garage on the site and don’t have enough space to extend the existing one. One advantage is that you can build it anytime after the house is built.
Each one of the above-mentioned garage types can be configured in any way and can have a room or rooms on top of them granted they are structurally sound.
There are a few things you need to consider if you want to include storage space in your garage
- Your cars equipment and tools
- Your garden equipment
- Toys and sports equipment
- Basically, everything that you think will cluster your house
There’s a lot of storage solutions out there, but we will only look at three types of storage equipment in a garage
Shelves are the perfect solution when you don’t have a lot of space in the garage. The biggest advantage storage shelves offer is mobility. You can arrange them anywhere in the garage and move them from one location to another
A more popular solution is cabinet storage, cabinets are incredibly robust and is a must. If you need a workbench, cabinets come in a variety of sizes. You can even get as a complete workshop area, with both base and wall-mounted cabinets. It’s the perfect solution if you are thinking about using your garage for storage and working
Pegboards are ideal if you do not have any extra room in your garage and can also be used in conjunction with shelves and cabinets to provide more space to your garage.
Another great idea is roof storage, it’s one of those areas in buildings that is scarcely used, you can change that by using different types of storage on the garage with one over the hoot being more spacious. You can also utilize the area above the car or next to the garage door, a perfect solution if you have the misfortune of having a garage so narrow you can hardly get out of the car.
Each one of the items mentioned above can be used either separately or together to provide a more cohesive solution when storage space is at a premium.
